Guide inside the Loh evacuation center cave dwelling site

Loh Historical Sites & Lookout

A hike through the inner island that takes you to ancient archaeologic sites and teaches you about the history and customs of the people of the island along the way. If you only do one activity, this should be the one.

  • Stop 1 — Loh Evacuation Center: historical cave dwelling sites that the inhabitants of Loh now use as shelter during typhoons.
  • Stop 2 — Rolling Stone: a huge boulder of an ancient legend. Learn about historic villages and traditional way of life along the way.
  • Stop 3 — Warrior Platform: intricately carved stone pillars. Learn about warrior training, traditions, and beliefs. Be extra respectful here — this is a very powerful site for the Torres people.
  • Stop 4 — Island Lookout: a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the island from which you can see Twin Beaches, the airport, Tegua, and Hue.

Note: Wear very good footwear. Around 3–4 hours of hiking in jungle. Bring water, snacks, and mosquito repellent.

Boat tour heading out toward the coastline

Outer Islands Boat Tour

An all-day boat tour to explore the surrounding islands. Bring sun protection, swim gear, sunscreen, sandals, and money for lunch.

  • Stop 1a: witness the mystical waterfall water-summoning ritual on the island of Hue.
  • Stop 1b: explore a huge bat cave & swim in the cave opening under the waterfall.
  • Stop 2: learn about cattle farming and managing a coconut plantation on the island of Metoma. Lunch provided here.
  • Stop 3: snorkel around a reef island just off Tegua — some of the most varied, densest concentrations of reef fish in the world.

Bring sunscreen, sun protection, plenty of water — the UV is intense! Bring good footwear and a headlamp for the bat cave: it's dark, there's guano on the ground, and the rocks are slippery, so exercise caution for this part of the tour.

The higher relative cost here is due to the price of gas: 70L of fuel must be purchased on a nearby island to make the complete trip, at ~450 VUV/L as of time of writing — an estimated 32,000 VUV for fuel. The tour price is 8,000 VUV (fixed) plus the cost of fuel, covering the boat charter, crew, waterfall ritual, and lunch.

Guide fishing from a traditional outrigger canoe

Traditional Fishing Tour

Learn several traditional fishing methods still practiced in the Torres Islands. Choose which technique you'd like to try with your guide: paddle out in a traditional outrigger canoe to fish by hand line, attempt the challenging art of hand-spear fishing in shallow water, or use a simple pole and line — a method often practiced by local women. You can also take the tour more than once to try a different fishing method each time.

Note: You should be able to swim 100m and feel confident in open water if you choose the outrigger canoe option.
